Where do I sign up for a Learn To Row Class?

After making certain you meet any requirements and can attend the class dates.  Sign up for a Learn To Row Class at:  http://chicagorowingunion.org/members

Is this class appropriate for adults with no rowing experience?

Chicago Rowing Union's Learn To Row class is designed specifically for beginners with no rowing experience. Our classes include both land practices and on-the-water training.  We provide guidance on proper rowing technique and safety, as well as indoor machine and tank simulation training during the land-based portion.  Most of your class time will be on the water in the North Channel of the Chicago River to get actual hands-on experience in the boat.  We start slow and gradually build up to a proficient level of sweep rowing.

Is there an age requirement?

CRU keeps a roster of roughly 50 individuals that span a wide age range.  As with any exercise routine, it is recommended you check with your physician prior to beginning the class.

All CRU members do need to be a minimum age of 18 years old.

What are the requirements to register?

The class is open to everyone, provided there are enough open "seats" in the session.  The sooner you can register, the better chance of securing your space in the boat.

What is the cost associated with the class?

The class costs $160 per person, which includes the rental space of the boathouse facility, rowing tank room, coaching fees and equipment fees.

Is the session both days (Saturday/Sundays) or do we pick one of the two?

The class is on both Saturday and Sunday provided the weather allows full days during on-water practices. Each session (A, B, or C) has 8 classes.

What if I have to miss a class?

Participants are highly encouraged to attend all 8 classes. The learning curve to rowing is steep, and the only way to become proficient is through practice. In order to graduate, and be eligible for the Novice program, you must attend at least 6 of the 8 classes. If you know you will have to miss a class, we ask that you notify the instructor as soon as possible.

What happens after I complete Learn To Row?

When you complete the Learn To Row classes you will be eligible to sign up for the Novice program, where you can continue to practice twice a week with others from the Learn To Row classes or of similar experience level. CRU's Novice Coach will help you fine tune your technique to elevate your skill both individually and as a team. The Novice Program continue's for the rest of CRU's rowing season through the end of October, during which you will have a chance to compete in regattas and attend social events with the team.
